Way of the Scout - Primitive Skills Overnight

IMG_1164.jpg

Ages 9-12

The scouts walk the boundaries of the camp noticing each bird call and track. They observe the village below and come down occasionally to share the stories from the hills. They adventure the landscape gathering bones, plants, rocks and wood for materials to make arrows, buttons, pouches and tools. One with the ways of the earth they harvest only what they need giving thanks along the journey. In the evening they sit by a smokeless fire and fall asleep under the stars.

Many books tell the stories of those who lived on the land in times past or those who are brave enough to try now. This three day two night camp at our 250 acre organic farm in Petaluma, is an opportunity to create a primitive camp site from scratch and learn some of the skills needed to camp without much gear. It will also introduce basic skills for creating primitive crafts, first steps to basketry, clothing and such. All of these "serious" skills will be sure to be wrapped in lots of play and unstructured time outdoors with the experienced guidance of Vilda Instructor and primitive skills enthusiast Dane Bowman.

In addition to our core curriculum, this camp may include:

  • Fishing
  • Knife certification and skills
  • Shelter Building
  • Fire by Friction
  • Stealth and scout games
  • Archery
  • Primitive crafts
